Near Brockenhurst there is a small herd of Shetland ponies. Last year there was just one foal born. This year the herd have almost doubled their numbers by having five new foals.

As small as they may be, it is amazing to see the foals act like fully grown horses by racing around snorting and kicking their back legs in the air - despite the fact they are not much bigger than labrador dogs.

The weather has been overcast and humid today. Just the sort of day when you think a thunderstorm is imminent, rather like the storm we had a few months ago. The photos were taken in the New Forest across Wilverley Plain.

Each of the images used 30 seconds exposure.
There is something exciting about a really good storm, whether it is just listening to the thunder or counting the seconds from the thunder to the flash and working out how close the storm is. This storm was about a mile from home and it rumbled around for hours during the night - so not much sleep!
See you soon.

In a matter of just a few weeks the countryside has been transformed from a winter sleep to a glorious profusion of wild flowers. Bluebells flower under trees of beech and silver birch that are putting forth their delicate light green leaves.
The bright yellow gorse across the New Forest supports the nesting birds. You may have heard ‘ When gorse is out of blossom, kissing is out of fashion’.
Luckily once gorse comes into bloom it flowers most of the year!

From the earliest times English Architecture has dominated our landscape. The magnificence of cathedrals and the wealth of stately homes to simple cottages gives us the very nature of our villages, towns and cities. Old mixes with the new, sometimes to the detriment of both styles, but each lends us an image of our heritage and that which we leave to future generations.

How ancient builders managed to create such wonderful places, at a time when they worked with simple tools, should be a lesson that anything is achievable given the will and the incentive to do so.

We must not forget that the wealth owned by a few allowed them to live a life of luxury whilst the poor struggled. Without the mosaic of these economics we would not have the architecture evident in England today.

Enjoy!

The weather has been really good lately for extreme power kiting on Wilverley Plain.

My son and his friend spent hours there at the weekend.
Having a buggy is great!

There are five types of deer in the New Forest - Red, Roe, Fallow, Sika and Muntjac. Tourists to the forest are more likely to see the Fallow and Roe deer. The photos in this blog were taken at the deer sanctuary at Bolderwood near Brockenhurst.
The animals find this is a peaceful place and come to eat and rest here everyday.
The new fawns will be born in the next few months and the adults will have shed their antlers by then.

See you soon.
